The newly formed Coalition of Organisations in STEM (COS), a network of private entities, non-governmental organisations, and (STEM/STEAM) advocates, has urged Ghana’s Minister of Education to strengthen partnerships with local stakeholders to revolutionise the country’s STEM education system.

In a statement the COS acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to advance STEM education but noted that significant untapped potential remains.

The coalition believes that by leveraging local expertise and resources, Ghana can create a more dynamic and impactful STEM ecosystem that benefits students and drives economic growth.

Emphasising the need for innovative, 21st-century educational practices, COS expressed strong support for the Minister’s vision of ensuring equitable access to STEM education for all Ghanaian children, regardless of their financial background.

The coalition stressed that homegrown solutions must be at the core of any educational reforms to foster a sustainable, innovation-driven economy.

Despite the increasing focus on STEM in Ghana, COS raised concerns about the limited engagement with local STEM professionals in past initiatives.

According to the coalition, this lack of collaboration has hindered opportunities for innovation, job creation, and the development of a self-sufficient STEM ecosystem.

To address this, COS urged the Minister to avoid the missteps of previous administrations and pledged its commitment to establishing a platform for local STEM players to contribute meaningfully to education delivery from the primary level.

The coalition projected that such efforts could generate over 1,000 job opportunities for young Ghanaians.

Highlighting the importance of harnessing local expertise, COS called for active collaboration to develop tailored STEM initiatives that align with Ghana’s unique needs.

The coalition believes that integrating local knowledge and resources will not only enhance learning outcomes but also contribute to national development.

With optimism for the future, COS expressed confidence in the Minister’s leadership to cultivate a thriving STEM ecosystem that empowers the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and industry leaders while creating sustainable employment opportunities for Ghanaian youth.
