The Achimota Circuit Court has granted bail to Mohammed Zakou, a known activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following his arrest over an alleged false Facebook post about Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

Zakou was picked up on Saturday, April 12, after posting “Rest Well Her Excellency” with crying emojis on Facebook. The post, which came amid reports that the Vice President was unwell, was interpreted as a false announcement of her death.

He was subsequently charged with publishing false news. A prosecutor from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) told the court that Zakou admitted to making the post but claimed it was meant as a gesture of goodwill.

During proceedings on Monday, April 14, Zakou’s lawyer, Gary Nimako Marfo, applied for bail. The state did not oppose the application but requested conditions to ensure his continued availability.

The court granted bail in the amount of GHC 100,000 with two sureties. Zakou is also to report to the case investigator weekly.

The case has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for a case management conference.
