Galamsey fight: You can’t repeat the same mistakes and expect a different results – GSSMA warns government

A member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah Esq., has made a passionate appeal for politicians found to be complicit in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, to be exposed and held accountable, regardless of their political affiliation.

According to him, Ghana is a country richly endowed with gold, but the blessing of this natural resource is gradually turning into a curse due to the mismanagement of the sector and the destructive activities of illegal miners.

He expressed deep concern about the alarming environmental degradation caused by galamsey, particularly the pollution of water bodies, which now results in water shortages in many communities.

Mr. Jantuah emphasized that legal mining firms that are found to be supporting or benefiting from galamsey activities in forest reserves should be dealt with decisively, as their intentions do not align with the country’s development goals.

He described the current water crisis, where many homes go without water for days, as a looming disaster that needs urgent intervention.

He urged the public and leadership to rally behind the current Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and refrain from politicizing the fight against illegal mining.

He noted that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who once declared his commitment to end galamsey by putting his presidency on the line, failed to fully capitalize on that pledge.

He urged him to collaborate with the current administration to fight the menace.

Mr. Jantuah stressed the importance of collective action, noting that the issue of galamsey transcends party lines.

He insisted that whether it involves members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), CPP, or People’s National Convention (PNC), any politician found to be involved must be exposed to safeguard the future of the nation.

In his view, it is time for serious action, devoid of excuses and political protection, to save the country from irreversible damage.
