The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has called on the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) and other civil society organizations to publicly condemn what he described as an unconstitutional and dangerous action by President John Mahama on the suspension of the Chief Justice.

Speaking during the party’s National Thank You Tour on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Mr. Kodua expressed deep concern over the development, stating that what was supposed to be a joyful day for the party had turned somber due to what he termed an unprecedented assault on Ghana’s judiciary under the Fourth Republic.

“Yesterday was a sad day for the democracy of this country, whereby under the 4th republic an independent organ, the Judiciary was attacked, to the extent that the Chief Justice of the Republic have been suspended by a siting President. Something that has never happened under this 4th republic,” he said.

Mr. Kodua emphasized that the NPP strongly disapproves of the President’s action and views it as a deviation from Ghana’s democratic principles. He argued that the suspension is not only inappropriate but also unconstitutional, especially considering that there is an active petition before the Supreme Court challenging the legitimacy of the process.

He urged the Ghana Bar Association and other civil society bodies to speak out against the President’s move and safeguard the integrity and independence of the judiciary.

“The actions by His Excellency President Mahama is unconstitutional, more so when we know a petition has been filed at the Supreme Court challenging the very process. At least the President should adhere to the rules and principles of the law by allowing due process to follow before he can even carry on with the politically motivated activity, at least the law should speak first. We are on this medium calling on civil societies, particularly Ghana Bar Association to come out to condemn the actions of His Excellency President John Mahama,” he added.
