Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed strong confidence in the party’s ability to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
Addressing members of the NPP diaspora in London, Dr. Bawumia pointed to historical political trends in Ghana, arguing that opposition parties often have an advantage when a sitting president completes two terms.
“Our political history suggests that it is very difficult for a first-time presidential candidate to win an election in Ghana, so there is a sense that in 2028, the NDC will bring a candidate for the first time, and I believe we will have an advantage”.
Beyond historical patterns, Dr. Bawumia also cited economic challenges as a potential advantage for the NPP.
He argued that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) might struggle to fulfill its numerous campaign promises, leading to dissatisfaction among voters.
“In opposition, they made so many promises and told a lot of stories about what they were going to do, and now that they have come into government, they said they would reduce the cost of living… but prices are rather going up,”.
He assured supporters that the party had learned valuable lessons and would use those insights to strengthen its strategy moving forward.
