The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has launched a large-scale demolition exercise targeting unauthorized structures built on waterways, following the recent devastating floods that struck parts of Accra.

The operation, which began on Tuesday, May 27, is focused on ecologically sensitive Ramsar sites, including Tema, Klagon, and the Sakumo Ramsar site.

These wetlands are vital for natural drainage and flood control, but years of encroachment by developers have severely undermined their effectiveness, contributing to Accra’s worsening flood crises.

Speaking at one of the demolition sites, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo emphasized that affected property owners had been warned well in advance but failed to comply with directives.

“They are aware. In fact, there has been engagement, and they were fully informed about this exercise. Some of these buildings had ‘Stop Work’ notices, but the developers ignored them”.

The minister stressed that the demolition was not arbitrary, but rather a necessary intervention to protect lives, property, and the environment.

The recent floods displaced residents, submerged homes, and disrupted economic activities, prompting renewed public pressure on authorities to crack down on illegal developments in flood-prone areas.
