Colombian senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay is in critical condition after being shot during a campaign rally in the capital, Bogotá.
The 39-year-old was addressing supporters in a public park on Saturday when he was struck by three bullets—two to the head and one to the thigh. Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of a 15-year-old suspect at the scene.
In a public appeal, Uribe’s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, called on Colombians to pray for his recovery. “Miguel is currently fighting for his life. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are treating him,” she said.
His party, Centro Democrático, has condemned the attack, describing it as a direct assault on Colombia’s democracy and freedom.
Footage circulating online captures the moment shots were fired, causing panic among the gathered crowd. Uribe was immediately airlifted to the Santa Fe Foundation hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains in intensive care.
Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán confirmed on Saturday night that the candidate was in critical condition following emergency procedures. On Sunday, the hospital reported that he had undergone surgical interventions on his head and left thigh and is currently being stabilized.
Medical officials say his condition remains extremely serious.
