The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has renewed the curfew in Walewale and its environs, North East Region, from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am, effective June 9, 2025.

In a statement, the government called on the Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and people of the area to exercise restraint and use non-violent means to ensure peace.

Meanwhile, there’s a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons in Walewale and its environs and anyone found with arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.

Earlier, Some irate youth in Walewale vandalised the vehicle of the North East Regional Minister, Tia Ibrahim, over the curfew imposition.

The incident occurred on Saturday night after residents and chiefs kicked against the curfew which has been imposed on Walewale township on Saturday, February 15.

It took military reinforcement to free the Minister, who was unharmed.

They view this decision as an ineffective measure that fails to address the underlying issues of insecurity and crime within the Bawku, Bolga, Walewale and Tamale highways.

The residents are calling on the government to urgently reconsider its stance, arguing that a curfew will not resolve the pressing challenges facing Walewale. Instead, they fear it may alienate the community further and escalate tensions among the populace.
