GRNMA suspends nationwide strike following Parliamentary intervention

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has officially suspended its ongoing nationwide strike, which began on June 2, 2025, following a fruitful engagement with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health.

In a press release issued today, June 13, signed by GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo and General Secretary Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, the Association announced that the industrial action which escalated from symbolic protests involving red armbands to a total withdrawal of nursing and midwifery services by June 9 is now on hold, pending further discussions scheduled for June 26, 2025.

The strike was initiated to demand the immediate implementation of the Collective Agreement signed between the Association and the government in May 2024. GRNMA leadership maintained that their call for action was not politically motivated, emphasizing that the Association remains a non-partisan body solely committed to the welfare of nurses and midwives in Ghana.

“We are nurses and midwives trained to provide essential health services to the Ghanaian population. However, we cannot effectively care for others when the system fails to care for us,” the statement read.

GRNMA also sought to clarify what it described as misinformation and propaganda surrounding the strike, reiterating that the action was purely professional and in response to the government’s inaction on critical welfare issues.

According to the Association, the intervention by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health has laid the foundation for a peaceful resolution of the impasse.

GRNMA leaders expressed gratitude to the Committee for its prompt engagement and leadership in addressing the concerns raised.

“All nurses and midwives are directed to resume their regular shift duties from Saturday, June 14, 2025,” the statement directed, while assuring members that leadership remains committed to seeing the full implementation of the Collective Agreement.

The Association also extended appreciation to the media for amplifying their concerns and urged journalists to maintain professionalism and accuracy in their coverage to counter misinformation.
