Tragedy struck Saturday June 21, 2025 when a hot air balloon carrying more than 20 people burst into flames mid-air and crashed in the southern state of Santa Catarina, killing at least eight passengers and injuring several others.
Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello confirmed the death toll on social media, stating, “We are all shocked by the accident involving a balloon in Praia Grande…So far, we have confirmed eight deaths and two survivors.”
Rescue teams remain on the scene, searching for other individuals who may still be unaccounted for.
The balloon, reportedly carrying 22 people, ignited while airborne.
Shocking video footage circulating online shows the balloon engulfed in flames before deflating and plummeting to the ground, leaving a trail of smoke behind.
Authorities have yet to release the names of the victims.
Meanwhile, Emergency responders quickly arrived at the site and transported survivors to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though officials are examining potential mechanical failures and safety breaches.
