Rabbit meat is widely recognized for its low fat, high protein, and high digestibility qualities, making it a healthier alternative to many red meats. But until recently, accessibility and awareness remained key barriers to mainstream consumption, especially in Ghana.

Bunny Bites, a KIC- supported startup is hopping ahead with a mission to change how Ghanaians consume protein by not only processing rabbit meat into consumer-friendly formats but also demystifying it as a viable, everyday protein option  while building a sustainable and health-conscious protein source affordable for the market.

Co-founded by Rabiatu Bi-Yaa Ali and three of her colleagues, Bunny Bites partners with smallholder rabbit farmers while also managing its own in-house farm to ensure consistent and quality supply chain. The company processes rabbit meat into multiple products, including whole skinned rabbit, shredded meat, sausages, canned rabbit meat, and rabbit kebabs, all developed to meet varying consumer preferences. The team participated in KIC’s AgriTech Challenge Pro in 2024, where they received funding support of USD10,000 from KIC, working in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation.

“At BunnyBites, we are redefining protein by making rabbit meat accessible, nutritious, and exciting. By working with smallholder farmers and adding value through innovative processing, we are creating a reliable market, supporting rural livelihoods, and putting healthy alternatives on more Ghanaian plates,” says Rabiatu Bi-Yaa Ali, Co-founder of BunnyBites.

Through its work, BunnyBites is addressing critical issues such as nutrition insecurity, rural unemployment, and market volatility for small livestock farmers. By establishing a reliable offtake system, the company is enhancing farmer incomes and building a stronger rabbit meat value chain in Ghana.

The Executive Director of Kosmos Innovation Center, Mr. Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, commended the company’s efforts: “BunnyBites is an example of the kind of agribusiness leadership Ghana needs, innovative, inclusive, and impact-driven. Their commitment to building a sustainable protein source while empowering farmers is helping to shape a more resilient food system for the future.”

As consumer trends shift towards healthier diets and traceable food sources, BunnyBites is positioning itself as a trailblazer in alternative protein production in West Africa. With increased awareness and strategic partnerships, the company is well on its way to transforming rabbit meat from a niche delicacy into a household staple.
