Adressing food security: Freshline is bridging the gap between harvest and market access

Food insecurity remains a critical challenge in Ghana and the world. Freshline, a KIC supported startup is on a mission to eliminate post-harvest losses, championing zero-waste production, and preserving Ghana’s traditional food systems through innovation.

Freshline is rewriting the narrative of how smallholder horticultural farmers bring produce from farm to the marketplace, focusing on localized, user-friendly, and climate-smart interventions that truly make a difference at the grassroots level. The start-up provides mobile solar-powered post-harvest management solutions to smallholder farmers in rural communities.

“At Freshline, we are building a future where no harvest goes to waste. Harnessing climate-smart innovation and preserving the integrity of traditional food systems, our start-up is creating farm-to-table solutions that empower smallholder farmers, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen food security across Ghana.” Abigail Mawutor Boadu, Co-founder, Freshline

Smart Solutions for a Local Problem

In Ghana, up to 50% of fresh produce can be lost between the time it’s harvested and when it reaches consumers, mostly due to poor handling, limited cold storage, and inefficient market access. Freshline targets these gaps by developing accessible technologies and logistic models that help farmers extend shelf life, access better markets, and reduce food spoilage.

From affordable cold chain systems to tailored packaging solutions, the startup’s innovations are designed to work seamlessly within the realities of smallholder farms, especially those located in remote rural areas.

Beyond Innovation: Empowering Farmers and Communities

Freshline’s work goes beyond technology, it’s about transformation. The startup runs community-based training programs in post-harvest handling, offers aggregation services, and supports farmers with market linkage strategies that ensure their produce gets sold, not spoiled.

Freshline also champions sustainable production practices that turn waste into opportunity, such as converting excess or unsold produce into nutritious food products, animal feed, or compost, further promoting environmental resilience and economic efficiency.

Support from KIC in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation

Freshline is part of the growing ecosystem of agribusinesses supported by Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC), an organization committed to nurturing Ghana’s next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs. KIC working in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation under the Initiative for Youth in Agricultural Transformation ( IYAT) Program, highlights the commitment of both organisations to empowering young people to access dignified and fulfilling jobs.

“Freshline is forward-thinking, impact-driven and defines the future of agriculture in Ghana, they’re tackling real challenges with practical, scalable solutions, and their commitment to zero-waste, food security, and farmer empowerment aligns perfectly with KIC’s vision for food systems transformation.” Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, Executive Director of KIC.

As the effects of climate change and food supply instability continue to impact rural communities, startups like Freshline are proving that local innovation can offer global answers, starting one farm at a time.
