Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, has condemned attempts to politicize the recent assault on healthcare workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).
His reaction comes after the Minority in Parliament alleged that the suspected perpetrator, social media activist Ralph St. William, has ties to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The activist was captured in a viral video clashing with emergency staff over alleged delays in attending to an accident victim, an incident which reportedly led to the assault of a nurse.
Addressing the press on Wednesday, August 20, Dr. Nawaane described the politicization of the matter as “very unfortunate.”
“They are saying that the perpetrators are individuals aligned with or have a sympathetic relation with the NDC. I thought that given what happened, we would unite as a nation and condemn it,” he said.
He stressed that the government had already taken action, noting that the Minister of Health had condemned the incident and commissioned a probe.
“In as much as it is an unfortunate situation, I want to call on the medical staff that the Health Committee of Parliament is with them in this trying moment. We are going to ensure that the case is investigated, and we are also going to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” Dr. Nawaane assured.
