Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that 1,455 Ghanaians displaced by the Gbinyiri land conflict remain in Burkina Faso, a reduction from an initial figure of about 2,500.

Providing updates at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on September 15, Mr. Ablakwa said, “I have also engaged my Burkinabe counterpart, His Excellency Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, on the welfare of our displaced compatriots.”

The update comes after his earlier disclosure that 8,000 Ghanaians had returned from Côte d’Ivoire, while 5,309 still reside there.

The Gbinyiri conflict, triggered by a land dispute, forced thousands of Ghanaians to flee across borders in search of safety.

As part of government’s support efforts, Mr. Ablakwa conveyed a message of peace from President John Mahama and donated CFA 6 million to assist humanitarian needs and facilitate the safe return of affected citizens.
