Bawumia Accuses Mahama of Double Standards on Covid-19’s Impact on Ghana’s Economy

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused former President John Mahama of showing double standards regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Ghana’s economy. According to Dr. Bawumia, President Mahama only acknowledges the global nature of the crisis when speaking on international platforms, but paints a different picture back home.

Dr. Bawumia made these remarks in Koforidua, Eastern Region, as he concluded a two-day campaign tour where he engaged with NPP constituency executives in New Juaben and the Akyem Abuakwa area.

He emphasized that prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, Ghana’s economic indicators were showing positive trends. However, the global pandemic significantly disrupted that progress, and its effects were later compounded by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which led to a sharp rise in global prices in 2022.

Dr. Bawumia argued that while the NPP government was transparent about these external shocks and their impact on the economy, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) chose to politicize the crisis instead of acknowledging its global dimensions.

He further criticized President Mahama, his main opponent in the 2024 election, for what he called deliberate dishonesty, accusing him of knowing the truth but misleading the Ghanaian public for political gain.
