Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has criticized Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the sharp depreciation of the cedi during the party’s tenure in government.

Speaking to delegates at Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region ahead of the party’s presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, Dr. Acheampong said Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had promised Ghanaians an economic turnaround by appointing Dr. Bawumia to manage the economy, but that promise, he argued, was not fulfilled.

“President Akufo-Addo told us he was bringing in a young man to stabilize the cedi and strengthen the economy. But in the end, the dollar, which we inherited at GHS 4, rose to GHS 17 when we were voted out,” he said.

Dr. Acheampong claimed that Dr. Bawumia was given every opportunity to demonstrate his competence by managing the economy effectively ahead of the 2024 elections but failed to deliver, citing the depreciation of the cedi as one of the major reasons the NPP lost power.

“We gave you a home match by entrusting the economy to you so you could win the election for yourself, but you couldn’t even manage the dollar,” he remarked.

He added that the NPP’s defeat in the last election was due to several factors and warned that repeating the same candidate in 2028 would not change the party’s fortunes.

“We all know the reasons we lost the election, and repeating the same candidate won’t help us,” Dr. Acheampong stressed.

He called on delegates to rally behind him, expressing confidence that he represents the best chance for the NPP to reclaim power in the 2028 elections.
