The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku has reaffirmed the government’s resolve to promote local cocoa processing and return Ghana to its former position as the world’s leading cocoa producer.

As indicated by Eric Opoku, who is also the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South Constituency in the Ahafo Region, Ghana holds the position of the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, with Côte d’Ivoire ranking first; but the President John Mahama led NDC government is taking steps to enhance Ghana’s annual cocoa output and regain its top position.

He made these remarks when he addressed the 2025 Bono Ahafo Women Cocoa Farmers Union (BAWCOF) annual festival, held in Techiman, the Bono East Regional capital on Tuesday under the theme “Nurturing Women, Cultivating Life”, a well-attended ceremony that brought together Nananom, Government officials, COCOBOD staff, politicians, women farmers, and stakeholders in the agriculture value chain.

Meanwhile, Dr. Richard Adu-Acheampong, Acting Executive Director of the Cocoa Health Extension Division (CHED) at COCOBOD who represented CEO Dr. Randy Abbey expressed his admiration for the outstanding performance of BAWCOF, encouraging them to persist in employing best farming practices to optimize their yields.

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry who doubles as the MP for Techiman North Constituency praised the critical role women play in Ghana’s agricultural sector and pledged support to BAWCOF members, particularly in the processing of cocoa beans to ensure value addition becomes a major driver of Ghana’s economy.
