NPP’s Kamaldeen Ibrahim questions NDC’s efforts in galamsey fight

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Kamaldeen Ibrahim, has questioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Happy 98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show hosted by Bismark Brown, Mr. Ibrahim argued that there is “nothing spectacular” about the NDC’s approach to tackling galamsey, despite the growing environmental devastation it causes.

He rhetorically challenged anyone to mention a single significant measure the NDC government has introduced to curb the menace. According to him, illegal mining continues to destroy farmlands and water bodies across the country with little visible action to halt the damage.

Citing an example, he lamented that residents of Winneba in the Effutu Constituency are now forced to depend on seawater for survival due to the contamination of their water sources by galamsey activities.

Mr. Ibrahim also recounted the case of a student in Winneba who reportedly suffered multiple hospital admissions after consuming polluted water.

He expressed concern that the rising cases of kidney diseases in the country may be linked to the consumption of contaminated water rather than lifestyle habits such as smoking or alcohol intake.

He, therefore, urged the government to adopt decisive and sustainable measures to end illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.
