The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the commencement of full implementation of the newly ratified Ghana–Qatar Labour Mobility Agreement.

The minister revealed this in a post shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, December 8, according to Ablakwa, he held discussions with Qatar’s Minister for Labour, Dr. Ali bin Saeed bin Samikh Al Marri, on the sidelines of the Doha Forum, where the two reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening labour cooperation between the two nations.

He expressed gratitude to his Qatari counterpart for what he described as “excellent hospitality and exceptional brotherhood.”

The agreement, which was ratified by both the Ghanaian and Qatari Parliaments last week, paves the way for structured labour migration and enhanced protection for Ghanaian workers in Qatar.

Ablakwa disclosed that there are currently about 13,000 Ghanaians working in Qatar, per official data from the Qatar Labour Ministry.

The government aims to double this figure by next year and increase it to 50,000 in the medium term.

As part of the implementation process, Ghana will host the inaugural meeting of the Ghana–Qatar Joint Technical Committee in February 2026.

The committee, created under the agreement, will oversee the partnership’s rollout and ensure transparency and accountability.

The minister further assured that the recruitment of Ghanaian workers will follow a transparent and credible process, offering opportunities across sectors such as aviation, tourism, information technology, logistics, transportation and public health.

Ablakwa emphasized that the Mahama administration remains committed to pursuing forward-looking policies to create job opportunities for Ghanaian youth both at home and abroad.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, wishing continued progress in Ghana–Qatar relations.
