President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at a significant role for Alan Kyerematen as Ghana prepares to assume leadership of the African Union (AU) in 2027.
This comes after ECOWAS heads of state endorsed Mahama as the next AU Chairperson.
Speaking at The African Summit in Accra, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa conveyed Mahama’s message, stating Kyerematen will have a “very special place” in the AU chairmanship due to his work on African integration.
Ablakwa emphasized Ghana’s leadership will require expertise, institutional strength, and credible policy input, highlighting Kyerematen’s structures through the Centre for Strategic African Development (CENSADEV) as essential.
Alan Kyerematen, a former Trade Minister, has experience in trade policy and African integration, having served as Ghana’s Ambassador to the US and trade advisor at the UN Economic Commission for Africa.
President Mahama’s AU chairmanship aims to promote African unity, peace, and economic development.
