The Western Regional Police Command has intercepted two trucks carrying large quantities of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp at Nkroful and the Assokor barrier in the Shama Municipality.

The seizure occurred during a routine inspection when officers stopped the vehicles for checks. A subsequent search revealed that the trucks were loaded with significant amounts of the suspected narcotic.

An alleged attempt was made to bribe the officers to facilitate the trucks’ passage, but the police reportedly rejected the offer and proceeded with arrests and seizure.

Speaking to the media on Monday, 23rd February, the Head of Public Affairs for the Western Regional Police Command, Superintendent Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, said the first truck was stopped at the Assokor Police barrier, where three individuals initially fled, though police managed to arrest one of them.

The arrested suspect then led officers to a second truck parked at Nkroful Junction. In total, three people have been taken into custody.

Superintendent Adiku added that two of the suspects attempted to offer GH₵69,000 to the police to secure the release of their colleague.

The bribe was rejected, and all three suspects were arrested.

“On Monday morning, officers offloaded one of the trucks and discovered about 152 large bales of suspected Indian hemp, with each bale containing approximately 82 compressed pieces wrapped in yellow packaging,” she said.

Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will face prosecution under Ghana’s narcotics laws.
