Joseph Paul Amoah has become Ghana’s sole survivor in the men’s 200 metres at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, booking his place in Friday’s final after both his compatriots were eliminated in the semi-finals.

Amoah crossed the line in 20.24 seconds to secure his spot, overcoming a difficult draw to do so.

“It was good. I had a pretty tough lane draw, so I just wanted to put myself in a good position and finish strong,” he said afterwards.

He now goes into the final chasing his first individual Commonwealth gold, having taken bronze in the event at Birmingham 2022.

Amoah arrives in form, with a personal best of 19.99 seconds this season, but was measured rather than triumphant when asked about the weight of expectation on him this time.

“It’s all about execution. I’ve just got to make sure I run well and try to get on the podium,” he said, before conceding that the execution itself, in tonight’s semi-final, did not go quite the way he wanted.

It was a harder night for Ghana’s other two entrants.
James Dadzie, who came into Glasgow with the fastest time in the world this year at 19.79 seconds, missed out on the final after finishing fourth in his semi-final in 20.52.
Mustapha Bokpin’s campaign also ended in the semi-finals, where he placed seventh in 20.65.

Asked about his teammates’ exits, Amoah was philosophical.
“It’s just one of those things. In competitions, anything can happen,” he said. “He’s here, trying his best, and that’s good enough.”

The men’s 200m produced one of the biggest shocks of the day elsewhere too.
Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, the reigning African champion, failed to reach the final after finishing fourth in his semi-final in 20.32.
Eseme had looked set for a sprint double after winning the 100m title earlier in the Games in a record-breaking 9.83 seconds, but his bid for a second gold ended at the semi-final stage.

Amoah will now carry Ghana’s hopes alone into Friday’s final, scheduled for 21:25 local time at Scotstoun Stadium, as he bids to add another Commonwealth Games medal to his collection.
