The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to pay a visit to the school today [Wednesday].

The Asantehene’s visit will be to assess the extent of damage done following violent student protests last week.

Students of the school on Monday, 22 October 2018, led by the SRC, marched against what they described as oppression from school authorities and unfair treatment as a result of unwarranted assault on their colleagues by some security officers.

The students as part of the riot vandalized school properties.

The students burnt car tyres, destroyed windows and doors of some buildings and blocked some roads on campus to prevent cars from moving.

Before the protest, 10 students and one alumnus were arrested and later released.

This, coupled with the manhandling of some of the students by the school’s private security got the students infuriated, leading to the protest march.

The Asantehene has already stepped in to have lecturers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) call off their strike in protest of the dissolution school’s governing council.

The government on Monday requested the Chancellor of the KNUST, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll, to lead the next steps in constituting the University Council, in accordance with the university’s statute and relevant laws after KNUST chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) rejected the Interim Management Council set up by government.
