The two Canadian women recently kidnapped in the Ashanti Region capital of Kumasi have been rescued.

They were rescued in the early hours of Wednesday, June 12 at Suwaba, a suburb of Kumasi.

According to a statement issued by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the two – 19 and 20 – were rescued following an operation led by National Security Operatives.

“Details of the operation and ongoing efforts to ensure that similar incidents are successfully resolved will be made available in a subsequent press briefing scheduled for 15:00 hours today,” the statement indicated.

He assured all and sundry, particularly foreign nationals, that “Ghana remains safe”.

The girls, who were on a volunteering mission with non-governmental organisation Youth Challenge International, were bundled into a waiting vehicle near the Kumasi Royal Golf Club on Monday, June 3.

They had emerged from their place of abode, Silver Spring Avenue, which has since been shut down.

The police had invited public help with any information as they investigated the case.

On Tuesday, June 11, the National Chairman of the largest opposition party in Ghana – National Democratic Congress – was arrested in connection with information received from kidnapping suspects nabbed. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo was later released on bail.

The Canadian mission in Ghana has also been involved in rescue efforts after issuing a security alert to all its nationals resident in Ghana.

Officials joined the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, to Kumasi as investigations intensified.
