The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President Ben Nunoo Mensah says the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is a blessing to the Ghanaian athletes.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has been postponed to the summer of 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday.

The GOC President indicated most of the Ghanaian athletes are yet to qualify for the Olympics Games thus the postponement will help athletes prepare well ahead of the qualifiers.

Others athletes who have already qualified for Games will also get to prepare ahead of the games next year.

Speaking in an interview on Happy Sports with Ohene-Bampoe Brenya on Happy 98.9fm on the postponement of the Games, he said, “It’s even a blessing to the athletes and for those who have already qualified.

“We had to go and solicit funds to help these athletes go for their qualifiers. We spent close to $30,000 on the boxers. For now athletes will get a lot of time to prepare for the games.
Athletes will also get to compete in qualifiers ahead of the games.

He added that this has presented another opportunity for government and corporate Ghana to invest in the athletes.

“It has given us an opportunity to invest in these athletes so they can prepare very well ahead of the Games next year”.

“Government should also seek money to prepare these athletes for the Games”.
