The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) President, Mr. George Lamptey has welcomed the decision by the International Olympics Committee (IOC) to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has postponed to the summer of 2021 by the IOC due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The postponement according to the GBF President will help the boxers prepare adequately as well as those yet to qualify will also train hard.

“We take this in good faith. Other countries wanted to withdraw from the games and now it will give us more time to even prepare for the Games”, he told Happy FM.

“This will benefit our boxers in the sense that we monitor them through their training “

Mr George Lamptey told Happy Sports that the team will only take some few boxers to France for the next qualifiers.

“In our last qualifiers we will take just some few boxers to the qualifiers to be held in France. The coaches will determine those potential boxers who can grab a place at the Olympic Games”.

“Due to financial constraints that is why we will only go with some few boxers and also take those who are competent.

Captain of the Black Bombers, Samuel Tetteh on the postponement of the games said, “ This period will help us to train more. We are not going to relax. We hope the government can also help us with some training tour ahead of the games”.

Ghana Athletes Association (GAA) Vice President, Ababu Afelebiek also welcomed the decision and told Happy Sports that athletes will continue to maintain the protocols and keep them alive ahead of the competition next year.

“We have been in touch with some of our athletes abroad and have asked them to observe the protocols”.
