The Electoral Commission submitted a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) to the Legislature to pass legislation that will enable citizens to use the Ghana Card and the passport for registration into the voters’ register.

It was, however, reported that Parliament has frozen approval of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee’s report on the Electoral Commission’s Constitutional Instrument (CI) on the basis that the report was edited and deformed by Adentan MP, Yaw Buaben Asamoa.

Parliament could not debate and approve it on Friday, June 5, 2020 ahead of the maturing of the CI on Tuesday.

Considering these developments in parliament, civil society group, CARE Ghana, has expressed its disappointment in parliament and has stated that they choose to believe in the “public court of opinion” than in parliament.

Executive General Secretary of the group, David Kumi Addo, in an interview on the Happy Morning Show, told host Samuel Eshun, “We know that the majority in parliament are New Patriotic Party (NPP) members who are pushing for the C. I to go through. I am sure you might have also heard of the doctoring of the committee’s report by Yaw Buabeng Asamoa. So Parliament,in one way or the other are disappointing us.

Care Ghana believes in the public court of opinion. We are here to help the EC to ultimately help the Ghanaian citizens”.

He reiterated the group’s stance against the compilation of the new voters’ register by stating that the Electoral Commission will disenfranchise many Ghanaians if it goes ahead with the compilation of the new voters register. And that, in his view, is an infringement of the human right of Ghanaians.
