Former Black Stars captain, James Kwasi Appiah has proposed that the Black Stars captain’s armband should be rotated among the players to prevent the confusion that normally erupts in camp.

Happy FM’s quest to determine who has been the best Black Stars captain from 1990 till date has led to some interesting revelations from ex-players who have admitted that captaincy row during the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal cost Ghana the title.

The captaincy row which has become a virus on the national team and still persists till date can be resolved if there is a rotation of the armband among players in every game according to former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah.

Appiah was at the helm of affairs during the recent captaincy row between Asamoah Gyan and Dede Ayew prior to the 2019 AFCON which saw Gyan retiring from the national team after being stripped off the captaincy.

He returned to the team following an intervention by President Akufo-Addo.

According to Kwasi Appiah, the captaincy issue can affect the Black Stars in the years ahead if measures are not put in place to solve the problem.

Speaking in an interview with Odiasempa Kwame Oware on Happy 98.9FM he said,
“Sometimes this captaincy issue comes as a result of poor communication from management members or certain people trying to push their own agenda.

“Looking at our current situation I will propose we rotate the captain’s armband and also a general captain appointed to speak on behalf of the players. Brazil and other countries have made it work so we can also emulate them.

“We should be careful or else this captaincy row can affect the national team for years to come”, he added.

He advised that selecting a captain for the team should be the responsibility of the coach.
Kwasi Appiah named Andre Dede Ayew as the new Black Stars captain before he left the job.
