Over five hours of downpour left parts of Ghana’s capital, Accra flooded on Tuesday, June 9, 2020.

Areas worst hit are Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Adabraka Sahara, Adabraka Timbaland, Adabraka Aponkye, Odorna, Kingsby Junction, Graphic Road, Agbogbloshie and surrounding areas.

A joint emergency services including the police, the army and the National Disaster Management Organization has been deployed to assess the situation.

The flood has affected free-flow of traffic, especially at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange and other link roads.

“In Achimota, many residents have been left stranded, with rubble washed onto the street. Some of them have left their homes to seek refuge under the Achimota overpass,” news portal Myjoyonline reported.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has also warned of a rainstorm that is expected to hit the eastern and coastal areas of the country today, Tuesday, June 9, 2020.

A statement from the Agency said, although the “thunderstorm” will affect the eastern portions of the country, most places in the coast are also expected to be affected.

The statement said the thunderstorm is “expected to affect more places along the coast (Ada, Tema, Ashaiman, Accra, Kasoa, Winneba, Mankessim, Axim and environs) and north of the coast (Agona Swedru, Bawjiase, Dodowa, Nsawam, Asamankese, Akasti and environs) with moderate thunderstorm between 0230UTC and 0630UTC.”
