The Executive Director of the Africa Education Watch has asserted that it is high time the West African Examination Council (WAEC) ceases to investigate and deal with cases of examinations leaks on their own.

According to Kofi Asare, there have been leaks in WAEC from time immemorial and all investigations which have been undertaken internally have never yielded any results or seen to the punishment of persons responsible for these leaks, who many suspect are officials of WAEC.

The comment comes on the back of the widespread leakage of examination questions including Economics, English, Social Studies and Chemistry (Practicals) and answers on social media platforms in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with Happy 98.9 FM’s Samuel Eshun host of the Happy Morning Show he said, “We want to move forward as a nation so WAEC will not investigate itself again in this exam leak. We want parliament to investigate them.”

Kofi Asare indicated that pictures of these ‘apor’ on social media indicates that the source of the exam leak is directly from the WAEC headquarters.

“Persons in WAEC strong rooms take pictures of the question and circulate them via WhatsApp. A picture of the leaked Core Mathematics paper proves this. In the picture you can see parts of the office where the picture was taken. You even see the pack and padlock for packing and securing WASSCE questions on the table. Immediately you see the background, you know the source of the questions.”

“WAEC even said the Mathematics question leaked from their strong room. That is the impression I got from their letter. The leaks are from WAEC strong rooms,” he explained.

Executive Director of the Africa Education Watch insisted that WAEC has never done a good job and their independence in so many ways leads to their ineffectiveness. “The papers always leak and we don’t see any positive results from their internal investigations. Why would they investigate themselves and the same things happens year after year?” he sought answers.

Both parliament and student bodies have strongly condemned the leakage of examination papers

In a release, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) described the situation as shocking and disgusting adding that urgent measures must be taken by WAEC and the GES to ensure that students do not have access to the papers.

Whilst the Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), to act swiftly in canceling leaked West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) papers.
