The Tufohene of Agona Abodom, Nana Kwesi Obrempong (X), has appealed to the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to swiftly investigate a violent incident at Agona Abodom in the Central Region that resulted in one death and left several others injured.
Speaking in an interview with Happyghana.com, Nana Akwesi Obrempong (X) disclosed that the clash stemmed from a longstanding chieftaincy dispute within the Asona Royal Family, which was recently settled by a court ruling.
According to him, on August 2, 2025, while he was at his residence in Kasoa, he received a distress call informing him that supporters of one faction, led by Nana Kwesi Asare who had just won the court case had been attacked at Abodom by a rival group allegedly led by Kwesi Gyan during a victory celebration.
The Tufohene recounted that the attack resulted in the tragic death of Charles Kojo Asomaning, a civilian employee of the Ghana Police Service and uncle of the legitimate chief, Nana Kwesi Asare. Several others also sustained serious injuries.
He further revealed that his own property was extensively vandalized during the violence.
“My pub, which is one of the largest in Abodom, was completely destroyed. My money, television sets, fridges, and other valuables were taken away. Even my ten-bedroom family house left to me by my late mother was vandalized, its roofing sheets removed and my clothes destroyed,” he lamented.
Nana Obrempong alleged that he was targeted because he refused to support the rival claimant, Kwesi Gyan, during the court proceedings and instead stood by the legitimate chief, Nana Kwesi Asare.
He confirmed that some individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack but urged the police and the judiciary to ensure that justice is served swiftly and fairly.
Background
A violent clash at Agona Abodom in the Central Region on August 2, 2025, left one man dead and several others injured, following a chieftaincy dispute between two factions of the Asona Royal Family.
The deceased, Charles Kojo Asomaning, a civilian employee of the Ghana Police Service and uncle to the legitimate chief, Nana Kwesi Asare (Nana Segu), was allegedly butchered by thugs loyal to rival claimant Kwesi Gyan.
The violence occurred shortly after the Judicial Committee of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council ruled in favour of Opanyin Kwame Nyarko and Obaapanyin Ekua Ampiaah, both principal members of the Ebusuatsir Gate of the Asona Royal Family.
They had petitioned the council to declare that Opanyin Kwesi Prah had no authority to nominate or install anyone as chief or queen mother of Abodom and to nullify the nomination of Frank Asiedu as Odzekurow.
The ruling, certified on July 31, 2025, upheld their petition and restrained the defendants from presenting or installing anyone as chief or Odzekurow, effectively ending years of litigation between the factions led by Nana Kwesi Asare and Kwesi Gyan.
Tensions, however, boiled over when supporters of the victorious side Nana Kwesi Asare, held a small celebration at a private residence.
The event was reportedly attacked by a mob believed to have been mobilised by Kwesi Gyan, including hired Asafoatsemei from Weija and some Abodom residents. The attackers, armed with machetes and other weapons, injured several people and destroyed property.
In a controversial turn, police arrested some of the injured victims and detained Nana Kwesi Asare himself for allegedly organising the gathering without notifying authorities, charging him under the Public Order Act.
He and some relatives were held at the James Town Police Station and later sent to the Achimota District Court, while the alleged attackers remain at large, a situation the chief’s supporters describe as unjust and politically influenced.
