Tension is rising in the Abossey Okai spare parts hub as the Spare Parts Dealers Association has shut down more than 200 shops operated by foreign traders.
According to the association’s chairman, Henry Okyere, the move is in response to alleged violations of Ghana’s investment laws, particularly the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act.
In an interview on Happy Kaseɛbɔ, Mr. Okyere said foreign retailers have been given a three-day ultimatum to vacate their shops or face further enforcement actions, including the possibility of citizens’ arrests if state authorities fail to intervene.
The association’s Head of Communications, Takyi Addo, confirmed that many foreign traders have already closed their shops following warnings broadcast through a public announcement vehicle patrolling the market.
Mr. Addo stressed that the association’s actions are aimed at safeguarding local businesses and ensuring full compliance with Ghanaian laws.
The development, however, has stirred mixed reactions, with some traders voicing concern about potential disruptions to the market and the impact on livelihoods.
