The Appointments Committee of Parliament will today, Monday, November 10, 2025, vet Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, for the substantive position of Chief Justice.

The vetting, set to commence at 11:00 a.m., follows his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama. This was confirmed in an official notice issued by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations at Parliament.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination comes in the wake of the dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who had served as Chief Justice since 2023. During the session, Members of Parliament are expected to assess his credentials, judicial philosophy, and vision for strengthening Ghana’s justice system before making a recommendation to the House for approval.

Meanwhile, on Friday, November 7, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin dismissed a motion filed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, which sought to suspend the vetting process until pending court cases involving the former Chief Justice are concluded.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin had argued that proceeding with the vetting could interfere with ongoing judicial proceedings and raised constitutional and procedural concerns.

However, the Speaker ruled that there was no constitutional or procedural justification to halt parliamentary business because of a court case, warning that doing so would create a dangerous precedent.
