The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has expressed disappointment with the Majority Leader, Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, for failing to include the Obuasi military-civilian clash in Tuesday’s parliamentary business statement.

Speaking during proceedings on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Afenyo-Markin condemned the tragic incident, which resulted in the loss of eight lives. He described it as deeply unfortunate to lose such young, energetic individuals who could have contributed meaningfully to the country, while extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

“It is unfortunate that abled bodied young men have lost their lives, young men who could otherwise be productive for society have lost their lives and it shouldn’t be happening,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the Minority had expected Ato Forson to raise the issue before the Business Committee, despite the President’s directives on the matter. He argued that Parliament represents the people, and such a grave issue deserved attention in the House.

“Mr Speaker, we as a House expected the honorable Majority Leader to have brought this matter up to the business committee, yes the President can make his orders but this is the people’s representative. Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson my respected Majority Leader and leader of government business affairs, today is your first time to read business statement and this is National issue,” he added.

He urged the Majority Leader to ensure the matter is addressed for the record, noting that while Ato Forson is transitioning to the Finance Ministry, his responsibility to Parliament remains. Afenyo-Markin described the omission as unacceptable and called for immediate action to address the Obuasi tragedy.
