Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has officially confirmed that the total infrastructure cost for the 2023 African Games amounts to $195 million.
Originally planned for August 2023, the multi-sport event encountered delays due to ongoing construction, leading to a rescheduled date in 2024.
At a press briefing on Monday, Minister Ussif provided updates on Ghana’s preparations, highlighting significant investments in key facilities. These include the newly constructed Borteyman Sports Complex, the completed University of Ghana Stadium, and renovated campus accommodation serving as the Games’ Village.
Breaking down the expenses, the Borteyman Sports Complex accounts for $145 million, featuring an aquatic center capable of accommodating up to 1000 spectators and hosting various sports events.
The University of Ghana Stadium, with a development history dating back to 2007, incurred a cost of $34 million and will play a vital role in hosting events during the African Games.
The Games Village, with a budget of $16 million, will serve as the central hub for accreditation, transportation, and administrative matters, accommodating sports such as Armwrestling, Athletics, Squash, and Rugby.
Minister Ussif justified the expenditure, citing the disparity with Morocco’s 2019 edition, which benefited from existing infrastructure, thus lowering costs.
Additionally, a substantial portion of the budget, $47.7 million, will be allocated to operational expenses, covering various aspects such as tech meetings, allowances, accommodation, security, and transportation for athletes, officials, and volunteers.
With these investments, Minister Ussif anticipates reaching an audience of over two billion people. The Games are scheduled for March 8-23, 2024, expecting participation from approximately 13,000 athletes, technical officials, and medical personnel.
