As part of efforts to manage the environmental impact and ensure the safety of affected communities, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has inaugurated a committee to investigate the issues surrounding the Akosombo Dam spillage that occurred in September 2023.

The five-member committee, led by Ing. Kirk Koffi, has been assigned to scrutinize the events leading to the spillage, evaluate the response to the resulting flooding, and identify the areas impacted.

They will also assess the challenges faced during the process and review the strategies employed to address the consequences of the spillage.

The committee is expected to propose both immediate and long-term measures to prevent future incidents.

During the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Jinapor stressed the importance of a coordinated response to mitigate the effects of the flooding on the affected individuals.

He questioned the approach the government should take if compensation is deemed necessary and emphasized the need for sustainable planning and flood management strategies.

He called on key stakeholders, including local government officials, community leaders, and environmental experts, to provide the committee with relevant information to make their investigations effective.

Mr. Jinapor assured the committee of his full support in carrying out their assignment effectively.

The Chairman of the committee, Ing. Kirk Koffi, expressed his profound gratitude for the opportunity and assured the minister of carrying out their duties as expected of them.

The other committee members include Mr. Kwame Jantuah, Ing. Kofi Ellis, Ing. Kwaku Akosa, and Ms. Georgette Emefa Fugah, Esq., who serves as secretary.

The committee has been given a month to complete its work.

The inauguration of this committee highlights the government’s proactive approach to addressing flooding challenges and demonstrates a commitment to improving the living conditions of those affected and ensuring community protection.
