Local Oraganizing Committe of the All African Games have defended the government’s allocation of $48 million for the operational expenses of the games, following criticism from a Okudzeto Ablakwa.

North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa had raised concerns on social media about the additional spending, questioning the need for such a large sum on top of the $195 million already spent on infrastructure.

However, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the games, led by Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, insists that the cost is justified.

“Hosting pan-continental competitions such as the iconic African Games comes with significant investment but also with enduring country-impacting benefits,” the LOC said in a statement.

The statement went on to address specific points raised by MP Ablakwa, clarifying that the $48 million is not solely for the 18-day duration of the games, but covers operational expenses incurred since the LOC’s inauguration four years ago.

“The impression created by Hon. Ablakwa that the sum of USDS48 million will be spent within the period spanning 8th-23rd March is an erroneous and disingenuous ploy to divert the attention of Ghanaians,” the LOC said.

They further added that a breakdown of the expenditure will be provided after the games conclude, but emphasized the significant logistical costs associated with hosting 54 African countries, including areas like medical services, transportation, accommodation, and broadcasting.

The LOC reiterated its commitment to transparency and public engagement, stating that Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif will hold a press conference on March 4 to address any concerns and update Ghanaians on the country’s preparedness for the games.
