The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must now allocate budgets for their electricity consumption, as part of efforts to improve financial sustainability in the energy sector.
Speaking during a meeting with Parliament’s Energy Committee and power sector agencies, Energy Minister John Jinapor emphasized the need for MDAs to take responsibility for their electricity bills, noting that certain critical institutions will receive exemptions.
“All MDAs are supposed to pay for their electricity bills. They have to budget for it. These include the health sector, education, security agencies, and the presidency. Even with that, in the health sector, it is the laboratories, theatres, and wards that will be exempted,” Jinapor stated.
He clarified that in the education sector, lecture halls will be covered, but dormitories and restaurants will not be included in the exemptions. The classifications are currently under parliamentary review and will be published once approved.
