In a historic decision on May 8, 2025, American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the new pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.
He becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy in the 2,000-year history of the Roman Catholic Church.
Prevost, 69, hails from Chicago and previously served as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. Known for his missionary work in Peru, he led the Archdiocese of Lima and was a key figure in shaping the Church’s future leadership under Pope Francis.
Elected by a diverse group of 133 cardinal electors from over 70 countries, Pope Leo XIV’s rise signals a shift toward a more global and inclusive Church. He is expected to bridge the gap between progressive and conservative factions, continuing Pope Francis’ emphasis on compassion, social justice, and reform.
The conclave was held following the death of Pope Francis on April 21. The white smoke from the Sistine Chapel marked the moment the Church welcomed its first American pope.
