The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has commended the conduct of Uganda’s presidential elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election.

In a press release, the AU Commission Chairperson said President Museveni secured victory with 71.61 per cent of the valid votes cast in the presidential polls held on January 15, 2026.

H.E. Youssouf also expressed appreciation to former Nigerian President, H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, for what he described as his sterling leadership of the Joint African Union–Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)–Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission to Uganda.

The Chairperson reiterated the African Union Commission’s commitment to supporting the promotion of democracy and effective governance across the continent.

He further applauded the people of Uganda for their dedication to consolidating democratic gains, as well as advancing peace, security, and development.
