The Chief of Awutu Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region, Nana Kwaku Osardu III, has issued a strong warning to commercial motorcycle riders popularly known as Okada riders urging them to refrain from consuming alcohol, marijuana (wee), and other harmful substances while on duty.

Speaking during a registration and road safety sensitization program organized by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the chief expressed concern over reports that some riders take drugs before beginning their daily operations.

He described the practice as dangerous and irresponsible, emphasizing that it poses a serious threat to both the riders and the general public.

“Some of these riders take in drugs before starting work, which is very bad and can lead to fatal accidents,” Nana Osardu III stated.

The event, held in Awutu Bawjiase, aimed to educate Okada riders on road regulations and promote safer riding practices.

Also addressing the gathering was the DVLA Director ,Awutu Senya East, Municipality, Mr. Philip Appiah, who echoed the chief’s sentiments.

He encouraged riders to comply with traffic laws and avoid behaviours that could endanger lives or tarnish the image of the Okada profession.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to regularize and professionalize motorcycle transport services in the region.
