Nana Agyenim Boateng, the flagbearer of the United Front Party (UFP) also known as Gyataba, believes the recent survey conducted by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) on President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to combat corruption favored the government.

To him, the percentage awarded the president for his willingness to fight corruption is on the low side, and argues President Akufo-Addo has only 10 percent commitment to fight the menace.

“I think CDDs report was considerate of the President and his family. I think the right percentage is 90. 90 percent of Ghanaians doubt President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to fighting corruption and not the 62 percent as posited by the survey,” he indicated.

According to Gyataba, some leading members of the President Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) share in his assertion and agree there is a higher level of corruption in his (President’s) administration. “No President in the history of Ghana has been engaged in corruption scandals which included his family more than the sitting President. From the controversial Agyapa deal to the PDS saga. In all the higher cases of corruption being recorded, a family member of his is involved. This is becoming unbecoming and must be addressed.”

Gyataba made this known during an interview with Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the Epa Hoa Daben political talk show.

The politician drawing the minds of Ghanaians back to the Mahama-led administration and corruption allegations leveled against him by then-candidate Akufo-Addo said, “President Akufo-Addo called then-President Mahama incompetent and corrupt and claimed he (Akufo-Addo) was not corrupt but can he say that now?” he queried.

He intimated, “there is corruption going on right from the District Assembly to the Presidency. The President spends so much to charter a jet and when we’re against this spendthrift nature, they say there is nothing wrong with it. All those supporting the president are corrupt and are conspiring to commit a crime,” he exclaimed.

Background

A survey conducted by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) has revealed that the majority of Ghanaians lack confidence in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to fight corruption.

62% of 2,400 Ghanaians interviewed in a post-election survey conducted between May 23 and June 3, 2021, say they do not have confidence in the ability of President Akufo-Addo “to protect the country’s financial resources and curb corruption in the next four years.”

“While Ghanaians are split (48% vs. 48%) on the government’s ability to ensure that rule of law is upheld in the next four years, a majority [of them] are not confident in its ability to protect the country’s financial resources (53%) and curb corruption and official impunity (62%).”
