CID questions Boakye-Djan over EC remarks

A retired Ghanaian army officer has been questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for making some incendiary remarks in relation to the Electoral Commission to compile a new voter roll.

Major Rtd Boakye-Djan made the comment on an Accra-based radio station, Okay FM and had repeated same on multiple media outlets.

In the said interview, he said the rumpus surrounding the compilation of a new voters’ register could plunge Ghana into chaos.

Major Boakye-Djan had confirmed that he had failed to honour an invitation to the CID due to ill-health and had requested to host the officers at his home.

Though he had confirmed to Accra-based Kaspa FM that the police were at his residence, he, however, failed to give details on what transpired in that meeting.

As part of the interrogation process, an audio recording of the interview where he made the said comment was played to him and his statement taken, CNR reported.

Many members of the opposition  National Democratic Congress (NDC) appear to endorse his comments.

The EC has suffered a barrage of criticisms following its decision to compile a new register.

The NDC for instance, has expressed outrage after the election management body, submitted a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) to Parliament to pass legislation that will make only the National Identification Card and the Ghana passport eligible for registration onto the voters’ register.

This has led to accusations that the National Identification Authority (NIA) and the EC are conspiring to rig the 2020 general elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview on Kumasi-based Angel FM, the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said they will continue to push until the right thing is done.

“I fully endorse his [Boakye-Djan] comments,” Mr Asiedu Nketiah told the host adding: “I was surprised people had called for his arrest.”

“If someone issues early warnings about an impending disaster does he stand accused,” he quizzed.
