The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed support for Collins Dauda, the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, following his arrest by the Ghana Police Service in connection with disturbances at a voter registration center in Kukuom on May 11, 2024.

But the NDC on Monday, May 13, questioned the police’s handling of the matter and maintains that Mr. Dauda has committed no crime. The police are yet to secure a conviction in this case.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) strongly denounces the Ghana Police Service’s premature and unprofessional announcement of the arrest of Asutifi South’s Member of Parliament, Collins Dauda. The NDC asserts that Dauda has not committed any crime and rejects the police’s allegations of his involvement in disturbances at the voter registration in Kukuom as entirely false and deserving of contempt.” This statement was signed by Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s National Communications Officer.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has offered an alternative account of the events that transpired at the voter registration center, attributing the disturbance to thugs allegedly linked to the New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to the NDC, these thugs obstructed the registration center, prevented NDC supporters from departing, and initiated a shooting incident, which the police report reportedly confirms.

The NDC’s statement said at no point in time as the violence was unfolding was Collins Dauda present at the centre.

“For the record, we categorically state that Hon. Collins Dauda, the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, was not present at the Kukuom registration center on Saturday, May 11, 2024, contrary to the Ghana Police Service’s claims. In fact, Hon. Dauda was actively overseeing the registration process in his constituency, Asutifi South, and was not involved in the incident that occurred in Kukuom, which is actually located in the neighboring Asunafo South constituency.
