Conduct presidential primary with dignity – Rawlings charges NDC

Founder of opposition National Democratic Congress, Jerry John Rawlings prays dignity, transparency and fairness will reign in the party’s ongoing presidential primary.

After suffering two postponements, the largest opposition party is finally voting in all the 275 constituencies across the country to elect someone to oust the New Patriotic Party in the 2020 general elections.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, who is the favourite, is facing unbending opposition from six others.

They are Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin; former Vice Chancellor of University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi; former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr Sylvester Mensah.

The rest are a former Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah; businessman, Alhaji Nurideen Iddrisu, and a cadre, Mr Goosie Tanoh.

All the candidates, before swinging into campaign mood, consulted party’s founder and former President Rawlings.

Mr. Rawlings has however refrained from openly throwing his weight behind any of the seven candidates.

He prayed the party will come out of the primary unscathed.

“Let’s conduct today’s presidential primaries with dignity, transparency and fairness. My best wishes to all the candidates,” Mr. Rawlings tweeted on Saturday.

About 280,000 delegates are expected to participate in today’s exercise.
