Markets in the Greater Accra Region will be closed on Monday, March 23, 2020, for a disinfection exercise to guard against the novel coronavirus pandemic’s spread in Ghana, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced.

This is part of the nationwide disinfestation of public spaces to control the virus.

The AMA statement, however, assured that the markets would reopen the next day March 23 for normal business.

“In-line with the President’s directive on measures to contain and prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) with support from the Greater Accra Markets Association wishes to inform the general public that there will be a massive disinfection exercise across all public market centers within its jurisdiction,” the statement said.

“Towards this end, the markets will be closed down on 23rd March 2020 and reopen the next day for normal business to continue. The rationale behind the closure is to enable the Assembly to disinfect all the markets and other public places. This forms part of precautionary measures by the Assembly to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19)”.

The novel Coronavirus cases in Ghana have increased to 16 after five more cases were announced.

The five new cases are all in the Greater Accra Region.

The Greater Accra Region has 13 of the confirmed cases in Ghana with the other three being recorded in the Ashanti Region.

The latest novel coronavirus (COVID-19) updates from the Ghana Health Service suggest that cases of community spread may have been detected.
