Programme Manager of the Extended Programme on Immunization (EPI), Dr Kwame Amponsah-Akyianu has asserted that the priority of the World Health Organization (WHO) should be on measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and not on investigating the source of the virus.

He noted that the coronavirus disease is now transmitted through human to human contact and “we should not focus on its source now”.

Fortunately for medical health experts, the mode of transmission and portals of entry and exit for the virus is now known

“These portals are our nose and mouth. For us I don’t really mind if we’re able to identify the source but for now, it is not important to look for the source but we need to focus on the various ways to prevent and control the spread of the virus”, he said.

Dr. Amponsah-Akyianu made this known in an interview with Raymond Nyamador on the Happy Morning Show aired on e.TV Ghana and Happy FM.

On his authority, the knowledge on these entry and exit points have increased the strict adherence to the wearing of nose masks. And he insists the world and medical experts should rather focus their resources on controlling the spread of the virus and not its source.

WHO published the widely anticipated study on the source of the coronavirus disease on Tuesday. This study was based on an investigation by the agency’s fact-finding mission to the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the novel virus was first detected.

After a four-week visit, the WHO team composed of 17 international experts concluded in the report it was “extremely unlikely” COVID-19 sprang from a lab leak, a position that was first advanced by the United States last year. China has strongly rejected such allegations.

Instead, the scientists said it was “very likely” that the virus was introduced among humans through an intermediate host, and that it was “possible-to-likely” that the virus was transmitted to humans from animals.
