COVID-19: GBA may resort to pay-per-view to generate money for boxers- Alhaji Tophic

Alhaji Tophic, a member of the Ghana Boxing Authority(GBA), says the association is hoping to stage bouts for boxers to ensure they are able to generate revenue amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to the suspension of all sporting activities in the country. The inactivity has had adverse effects on the GBA and boxers as they are unable to generate revenue because there are no fights.

He explained that Ghanaian boxers cannot be left to their own fate during this pandemic and the Association is looking to support boxers with these bouts.

Alhaji Tophic stated that the GBA is looking forward to emulating the World Boxing Organization (WBO) as they plan to stage a fight which will be watched by fans on pay-per-view basis.

“One of the things we can do is to stage fights via pay-per-view.

“Pay-per-view will be an avenue whereby fans get to pay and watch boxing bouts at their various homes.

“The WBO is planning to stage a fight like that. We cannot sit down till next year to stage a fight. What will the boxers eat”, he told Odiasempa Kwame Oware on Wamputu Sports on Happy FM.

He further said that testing will be required for all boxers and the technical team should a fight be staged.

All sporting activities have been suspended by the government until May 31 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
