The decapping of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has significantly boosted its resources, enabling the government to focus on key areas such as sanitation in schools and teacher accommodation in rural areas, according to Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Abas Apaak.
Speaking at the Public Accounts Committee, Apaak highlighted the positive impact of the decapping on the government’s education initiatives. “The decapping of GETFund has allowed us to redirect resources to critical areas, including sanitation in schools and teacher accommodation in rural areas,” he said.
The GETFund’s increased resources will support several key initiatives, including the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, which has been allocated GH¢3.5 billion, with an additional GH¢4.1 billion made available through the decapped GETFund.
The government also plans to construct accommodation units for teachers in rural areas, improving their welfare and attracting more teachers to these areas.
Additionally, the government has allocated GH¢292.4 million for free sanitary pads to female students in primary and secondary schools, promoting menstrual hygiene and reducing absenteeism.
Mr. Apaak emphasized that these initiatives aim to enhance the quality of education and improve the learning environment for students.
