Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante has categorically stated that a Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia led government will abolish the 10% Value-Added Tax (VAT) on betting to alleviate the economic burden on the youth and boost the economy.

The Ghana Revenue Authority introduced a 10% tax on betting, games, and lottery wins in 2023, which sparked protests from the youth some of whom argued that the government’s failure to provide jobs has made betting their only viable option. They argued that taxing betting is unfair and will only exacerbate the economic hardships they face.

In an exclusive interview with Kwadwo Sefah-Danquah on Happy98.9FM’s morning show on Thursday, August 8, George Krobea Asante emphasized that the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, has pledged to eliminate numerous taxes to ease the pressure on Ghanaians and boost the economy. These taxes include the VAT on betting, electricity, spare parts, and others. Krobea Asante believes this move will significantly improve the living standards of Ghanaians.

He urged Ghanaians to vote for Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing that the NPP’s candidate has a proven track record of economic competence and a clear vision for Ghana’s future. He implied that the alternative, former President Mahama, is not a viable option, citing his administration’s failure to address the economic challenges facing the country.
